When the Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) piloted QAPI (Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement) in September 2011, no one could have predicted how it would positively impact the lives of residents and patients in nursing homes. By 2013, it became a Requirement of Participation for centers receiving Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements. Since then, CMS has continued to develop tools and resources to make this program effective in moving from reactive improvement (the QA) to proactive improvement (the PI).
