Captain John W. Ailes was born in New London, Connecticut, the son of a career naval officer. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1985, and was commissioned through the NROTC Program. Captain Ailes was assigned as the first Commanding Officer, USS CHAFEE (DDG-90), in August 2002. During his time in command, CHAFEE sailed to homeport in Hawaii, executed Combat Systems Ship Qualification Trials, Post Shakedown Availability, an accelerated training cycle and the ship completed deployment work-ups as part of the NIMITZ Carrier Strike Group. In March 2005, Captain Ailes began an assignment in the Program Executive Office, Integrated Combat Systems (PEO IWS). He served as the Surface Ship Combat Systems Manager, responsible for the development and integration of all Surface Ship Combat Systems, including the Aegis Weapons System and the Ship Self Defense System MK- 2. Captain Ailes assumed command of Port Hueneme Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center in August 2008.
